Case Study – Rio McEvoy, Blackburn Rovers Academy

Rio attended the Technical Skills Academy from the age of 7. After the very first session we where impressed with the quality of coaching. We recognised that the TSA was a very well run, trusted and professional set up.

What makes Thomas and the coaches at TSA so special is that they have a genuine interest in each individual player, moreover they have a great desire to see potential fulfilled. The coaches keep things in perspective by motivating the kids to work hard, encouraging them to learn new skills but at all times going to great lengths to ensure the kids are enjoying their football.

Rio enjoyed his weekly sessions at TSA, the coaching & guidance he received was instrumental in developing him into the player he is today. We do recognise that there is a long way to go in his development but really appreciate the work that the TSA coaches put into Rio.

The efforts and commitments that Thomas coupled with Rio’s hard work and determination has seen him sign a contract with Blackburn Rovers Academy at the age of 9 years old.

To date Rio has been able to experience playing against and scoring against the likes of Chelsea, Leeds United, Manchester United, Everton. It has been a fantastic experience for Rio. Whatever happens in his football career he can look back with great enjoyment.

TSA Annual England Trip Season 2015/2016

Through the TSA we have run annual trips to England for the kids and parents to enjoy a break away. We have had the pleasure to visit professional football academies at Leeds United, Everton and Wrexham F.C. In 2014 our boys also enjoyed a coaching session at Blackburn Rovers F.C and a stadium tour. One of them even got to train at the Leeds United Academy. Our annual trip for Season 2015/2016 is still to be finalised. Details to come soon.

TSA Player Mascot at Champions League game at the Emirates

TSA player Charlie Taylor got the opportunity of a lifetime recently when he was mascot at the Arsenal v Anderlecht UEFA Champions League game which finished 3-3. A cracking game with plenty of action and top class players on show. Charlie said that he “loved” the experience and when asked what team he would like to do mascot for he said “Liverpool”. Charlie is a big Liverpool fan and said it would be a dream come true to do mascot at Anfield. Unfortunately the way Liverpool are playing this season Charlie Liverpool won’t be in next years competition.

The Emirates stadium is one of the best football stadiums in world football and Charlie mentioned that there was a “massive” crowd at the game and that the “atmosphere was amazing and very loud”.

We would like to congratulate Charlie and wish him all the best at the TSA and in his future career path.

Case Study – Ewan Buchanan TSA player

Ewan answered a few questions for us;

1) What’s your thoughts on the Club NI programme?

I am currently lucky to be in the Club NI Development Programme and have been in it just over a year. I have played in the cross border cup and the Galway cup for Club NI. I train two nights per week at Club NI, club training and also TSA & 1-to-1 training with Playing for the Future.

2) How has the TSA & 1-to-1 training helped you as a player over the last two years?

I have really enjoyed my time at the TSA and doing the 1-to-1 training over the last two years. It has really helped me with me ball control and skills as well as using both feet for receiving, passing and protecting the ball. The 1-to-1 training focuses on specific exercises to help me in game related situations such as body shape and game awareness / management.

3) Did you enjoy your experience of training at the Leeds United Academy through the TSA trip last year?

It was a great experience training with the Leeds United u13 academy team last year at Thorp Arch. I learned a lot from the experience and will use it to my advantage in the years and months ahead. In my 1-to-1 sessions with Thomas he talks about challenging myself all the time and exposure to difference situations and a high level of football. This experience was one that I 100% learned from and enjoyed. It taught me to play at a higher tempo making me think quicker etc.

4) What is your goal over the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months I will work extremely hard on my all aspects of my game to be the best I can be, wherever that takes me. I will keep my feet on the ground and continue to work hard in school and working on my football skills every single day focusing on passing with both feet etc.
